SANDSTON, Va. — Fifteen years have passed since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen share their memories of that day as well as express the reasons behind their service to commonwealth and country in the five-part video series “Why I Serve.”

Since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 15,000 Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have mobilized on federal active duty for homeland security missions and combat operations, sustainment support, security and peacekeeping in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, Kuwait and other locations around the world.
