RICHMOND, Va. — Maj. Gen. (Va.) John Taylor, commander of the Virginia Defense Force, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Dennis A. Green, Virginia National Guard senior enlisted leader, recognized Sgt. Charles Clark, the VDF noncommissioned officer of the year for 2013, in a ceremony held Nov. 2, 2013, in Richmond, Va.

“After five years of service and dedication, my first sergeant nominated me and I went before the board and apparently I impressed the sergeants major,” Clark said.

Clark beat out a number of his peers for the coveted spot as the VDF NCO of the year.

“We’re here to honor an individual for his outstanding service as a noncommissioned officer in the VDF,” Taylor said. “During the last seven years, we’ve had a board every year and we’ve had good candidates, but it’s getting to the point now – and this is something you can feel proud of – we’re having great candidates.”

Green thanked the assembled members of the VDF for their service and volunteerism, saying part of what makes our nation great is the men and women who serve in uniform.

Clark, from Newport News, has served in a VDF for five years and works as an insurance adjuster. He said he joined the VDF five years ago because he felt the need to get involved and had exceeded the maximum age limits for the military, but, he said, “the VDF was there for me.”

The VDF is an all-volunteer force authorized by the Code of Virginia and organized under the Virginia Department of Military Affairs reporting to the Adjutant General of Virginia.
