Memorial Day events planned

NationalGuardLogo_300x300SANDSTON, Va. — Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr., the Adjutant General of Virginia, will lay a memorial wreath in honor of fallen Virginia Guard personnel at the Commonwealth’s Memorial Day Ceremony May 27, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Virginia War Memorial. The Virginia National Guard’s Clifton Forge-based 29th Division Band will provide ceremonial music and Col. Thomas Morgan, Virginia National Guard director of manpower and personnel, will be among the guest speakers at the annual Memorial Day Tribute Ceremony at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at 10 a.m. in Amelia.

The Commonwealth’s Memorial Day Ceremony is co-hosted by 11th District, American Legion. Virginia residents will officially commemorate this national holiday to honor and remember our valiant men and women who gave their lives in service to America at this outdoor ceremony. This event is an inspirational tribute dedicated to the proposition that Freedom is Never Free and includes patriotic music, memorial wreath laying and the playing of Taps. Governor Bob McDonnell is the invited speaker. The event is free, open to the public and with ample free parking and will be held rain or shine.

The Virginia Veterans Cemetery is located at 10300 Pridesville Road in Amelia, and the event is hosted by the American Legion Post 87 of Amelia.

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) is scheduled to deliver the keynote address for the Amelia event, and Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. W. Steven Flaherty is also scheduled to speak.

Parking space at the site is expected to be limited, so attendees are encouraged to use the shuttle bus service that will be available from the Amelia County High School at 8500 Otterburn Road, at the intersection of Otterburn and Five Forks Road (Rt. 38). The shuttle buses will bring visitors to within a few yards of the ceremony.

Visitors are also asked to bring lawn chairs, as seating at the site will also be limited.

The VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary will provide refreshments and water will be available at the ceremony.
