Adjutant General’s Veterans Day Message

Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr.

SANDSTON, Va. — This Sunday, the Nation will celebrate Veterans Day. At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, we will honor the contributions of the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces.

In 1919 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to mark the cessation of World War I; in 1954 the scope of the observance was expanded and renamed Veterans Day. This is a time of remembrance and appreciation for those men and women who have served bravely and honorably in the defense and security of our nation. Defending this great nation is a generational duty that continues today.

To all Veterans in the Commonwealth, we honor your valor, your sacrifices and exemplary service. To the current Soldiers and Airmen of the Virginia National Guard, I am proud to serve with you all. You have proven ready, relevant and responsive when deployed to support and defend the nation and the Commonwealth of Virginia across a myriad of federal and state missions.

As always – make safety a priority and take care of each other- It is an honor to serve with you all.

Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Long, Jr.
The Adjutant General of Virginia
