FORT PICKETT, Va. — Location-based fitness apps have made the news lately for endangering operational security and personal privacy. One app, Polar, shared information on 6,460 users from 69 countries and 208 sensitive locations like FBI offices, nuclear power plans and missile defense locations.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Don’t use fitness apps at sensitive locations
  • Turn off GPS tracking
  • Avoid starting a workout from home or work locations
  • Make sure your account is private
  • Don’t share workout info on social media
  • Avoid using personal information on application websites, e.g. real names, DOB, addresses
