Va. Army Guard 2017 battalion command selections announced

SANDSTON, Va. — Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, and Brig. Gen. Walter L. Mercer, Virginia National Guard Assistant Adjutant General – Army, announced March 29, 2017, the following officers have been selected for battalion command in the Virginia Army National Guard:

  • Maj. Dennis M. Rohler will succeed Lt. Col. Matthew A. Lutz as the commander of the Virginia Beach-based 529th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group. Both officers serve full time in the National Guard, and Lutz will return to duty on Title 10 status with National Guard Bureau. Rohler will succeed Lt. Col. James A. Williams as the full-time plans and policy officer at the Virginia National Guard Joint Force Headquarters and Williams will be the full-time deputy joint operations officer.
  • Maj. Michael P. Dougherty will take command of the Fredericksburg-based 229th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Lt. Col. Charles B. Martin. Both are traditional Guard Soldiers, and Martin will be reassigned as the Virginia Army National Guard deputy operations and training officer.
  • Lt. Col. Shawn G. Talmadge will succeed Lt. Col. Jared D. Lake as the commander of the Hampton-based 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. Both are traditional Guard Soldiers, and Lake will become the executive officer for the 116th IBCT after Lt. Col. Joseph A. Dinonno. Dinonno will become the Virginia National Guard joint operations officer in a traditional Guard status.
  • Lt. Col. Arthur S. Moore will take command of the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Lt. Col. Christopher J. Samulski. Both are traditional Guard Soldiers, and Samulski will succeed Col. Allan W. Carter as the 29th Infantry Division operations and training officer in a traditional Guard status.
  • Lt. Col. Edward W. Lewis will succeed Lt. Col. H. Cary Payne as the commander of the Fort Belvoir-based Headquarters Battalion, 29th Infantry Division. Lewis serves full time in the National Guard and will succeed Col. Allan W. Carter as the full-time 29th Infantry Division operations and training officer.
  • Lt. Col. Todd V. Riviezzo will take command of the Fort Pickett-based 1st Battalion, 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute from Lt. Col. Paul C. Gravely. Riviezzo serves in a traditional Guard status and Gravely works full time in the Virginia National Guard as the Fort Pickett Chief of Plans, Training and Security and will fill that role in a traditional Guard status as well.
  • Lt. Col. Todd A. Pegg will succeed Lt. Col. Travis Mabrey as the commander of the Fort Pickett-based 2nd Battalion, 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute. Both officers served in a traditional Guard status, and Mabrey has retired from the Virginia National Guard.
  • Lt. Col. Robert L. Fitch will take command of the Fort Pickett-based 3rd Battalion, 183rd Regiment, Regional Training Institute from Lt. Col. Craig C. Worsham. Both officers serve in a traditional Guard status, and Worsham will be reassigned as liaison officer at the Virginia National Guard Joint Force Headquarters.
  • Lt. Col. William X. Taylor will succeed Lt. Col. Thomas L. Hernandez as the commander of the Sandston-based 2nd Battalion, 224th Aviation Regiment. Taylor serves in a full-time National Guard status as the director of the Virginia National Guard Counterdrug Program, and Hernandez is a traditional Guard Soldier who will be reassigned as an exercise officer at the Virginia National Guard Joint Force Headquarters.

The effective date for each assignment will vary based on unit mission requirements and change of command announcements will be made when the dates are finalized.
