New professional development series kicks off in October 2016

SANDSTON, Va. — The Virginia National Guard will host a number of professional development activities beginning in October 2016 that are open to all personnel on a space available basis. Activities include staff rides / site visits and conference call discussions.

The following site visits are planned:

Topic: Revolutionary War – Yorktown Campaign
Online materials available Oct. 17, 2016, with a registration deadline of Oct. 22. A site visit is scheduled for Oct. 29.

Topic: Virginia History and Traditions – The General Assembly
16 Jan 2017 – Online materials available Jan. 16, 2017, with a registration deadline of Jan. 21. A site visit is scheduled for Jan. 28.

Topic: Virginia History and Traditions – The Evolving Role of the Militia
Online materials available April 17, 2017, with a registration deadline of April 23, 2017. A site visit is scheduled for April 30.

Anyone interested in taking part in the forum should visit the GuardU Professional Development Forum v2 course site at https://guardu.ellc.learn.army.mil and search for the for Virginia National Guard Professional Development Forum v2 to download read ahead materials.

The Virginia National Guard is also hosting quarterly professional development forums. These events use a synchronous and asynchronous format to discuss areas of significance for leaders at all grades. Synchronous events are conducted on the second Thursday of the second month of each quarter using conference call technology. Asynchronous activities will be conducted over a 10-day period.

GuardU will be used to provide materials and conduct the asynchronous portion. Participation is voluntary and there are no limits to the number of participants in the professional development forums.

The following events are scheduled:

November 2016 – Critical Thinking and Questioning
Online materials available Oct. 29, 2016, with the asynchronous period scheduled Nov. 1-10, 2016, and the synchronous event schedule Nov. 10.

February 2017 – Leading Change
Online materials available Jan. 29, 2017, with the asynchronous period
scheduled Jan. 31-Feb. 9, 2017, and the synchronous event schedule Feb. 9, 2017.

May 2017 – Trust and Leader Development
Online materials available April 29, 2017, with the asynchronous period
scheduled May 2-11, 2017, and the synchronous event schedule May 11, 2017.
