SANDSTON, Va. — Col. Dean A. Tremps is the new commander of the Virginia Air National Guard following the retirement of Brig. Gen. Wayne Wright, according to an announcement made May 27, 2015, by Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia. Tremps most recently served as the Director of Air, Space, and Cyber Operations for the Air National Guard.

“We are extremely fortunate to welcome Col. Dean Tremps as the new commander of the Virginia Air National Guard,” Williams said. “He is a command pilot with extensive experience at all levels of command, and his deep knowledge and diverse assignments will serve him well as our Air Component Commander.”

As the Air Component Commander, Tremps will be responsible for leading the Virginia Air National Guard, assisting and empowering Virginia Airmen in executing their respective plans, programs and missions. He analyzes and evaluates training programs and operational readiness levels to determine mission capability and unit effectiveness. He is the primary advisor to the Adjutant General of Virginia on Air National Guard affairs at both the state and federal level.

As the Director of Air, Space and Cyber Operations for the Air National Guard, he was responsible for the operations, training and deployment of 106,700 National Guard Airmen assigned to 89 wings, 890 units, 986 primary aircraft authorizations and 24,000 unit task codes.  He supported deployment and warfighting capabilities needed for world-wide requirements across all domains and directed the execution of a $2 billion Air National Guard budget including flying programs, military personnel, operations and maintenance and contracts spanning 54 states, territories and the District of Columbia.

Tremps was commissioned in 1988 after graduating from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He has flown the T-38, F-15C and F-16C aircraft. He has deployed and has combat time in the F-15C, F-16C and most recently the MQ-1B aircraft in support of Operation Provide Comfort, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. He has also flown several Operation Noble Eagle and POTUS defense missions. Tremps has been in the National Guard since 1998, serving in both traditional and active-duty statuses. Prior to his assignment at the National Guard Bureau, he served as Director of Air National Forces for Air Combat Command and Air National Guard Advisor to the Commander of ACC (COMACC) at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.

He is a command pilot with more than 3,200 military flying hours. He is a commercial airline pilot in his civilian career.

Wright received his Air Force commission in 1981 after graduating from the University of South Carolina. He transitioned from active duty to the Georgia Air National Guard in 1992. He has held various staff and command positions at the squadron, wing and headquarters level. He served as acting Adjutant General of Virginia from June 11 to July 14, 2010, and also served as Virginia National Guard Director of Joint Staff and Virginia Air National Guard Chief of Staff prior to becoming the Air Component Commander.

“We wish Brig. Gen. Wayne Wright and his family all the best as they move forward into military retirement and new opportunities and adventures,” Williams said. “He provided outstanding leadership and technical expertise that greatly benefitted the entire organization.”
